HAIKU POETRY

Haiku Poetry Type is a Japanese poem composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Haiku poetry originated in the sixteenth century and reflects on some aspect of nature and creates images.

What is haiku?

Haiku is a Japanese poetry form. The best haiku uses just a few words to capture a moment and create a picture in the reader’s mind. It is like a tiny window into a scene much larger than itself.

In English, haiku is normally written in three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third line.

An Example:

The last winter leaves
Clinging to the black branches
Explode into birds.

Try your hand at it and see what you come up with, leave your Haiku in the comments below.

The Poetry of Coldplay

Here are the first two stanzas to the song “Fix You” by Coldplay:

When you try your best but you don’t succeed (10)
When you get what you want but not what you need (10)
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep (10)
Stuck in reverse (4)

And the tears come streaming down your face (9)
When you lose something you can’t replace (9)
When you love someone but it goes to waste (10)
Could it be worse? (4)
The numbers after the line of poetry is the syllable count.  The first stanza went 10, 10, 10, 4

The second stanza went 9, 9, 10 4.  Not exactly a perfect rhyme scheme because the numbers were not identical in each stanza but very close.

Your job is to create a poem of at least two stanzas that follow the same rhyme scheme in each stanza.  You can borrow the rhyme scheme from the ColdPlay song or create your own rhyme scheme. Leave your poem in the comment section below.  If you don’t want to share your poetry with everyone say so in the comments or I will assume that you do and will share it once it is reviewed.
